HMI Board Members


Robinson Abraham, MA

Mr. Abraham founded Health Management, Inc. in 1983 and serves as the Chief Executive Officer. He holds an M.A. in Health Care Administration from George Washington University, and a B.S. in Social Work from Columbia Union College.

Upon completion of graduate studies, he entered a residency program in hospital administration at Holy Cross Hospital. He then moved to Washington Adventist Hospital, where he served as director of mental health programs and later as general vice president for operations.

With over 30 years of wide ranging professional experience in health care administration, education and international recruiting, Mr. Abraham provides HMI expertise in strategic planning, program administration, financial management, mental health programs, patient relations, home health care and cross cultural communications. His career has led him from clinical practice to clinical management, culminating in entrepreneurial leadership and international ventures.

Joseph Gurubatham, Ed.D

Dr. Joseph Gurubatham is a charter member of HMI’s Board of Directors. He holds a doctorate in Administration and Management (Education) from the Catholic University of America, an M.S. in Business Administration from the Pennsylvania State University and a B.S. in Office Administration and Business Education form Columbia Union College.

Dr. Gurubatham is currently president of Griggs University, a long distance education institution. As the administrator of an institution which offers a variety of allied health programs, he is active in the design and evaluation of health education programs. Prior to this, Dr. Gurubatham was the vice president of academic affairs for Columbia Union College, Maryland.

His areas of specialization are personnel management, salary and wage administration, program planning and evaluation (PERT), systems theory, leadership theory, behavior and communication.

John Karefa-Smart, M.D., M.P.H.

Dr. John Karefa-Smart has extensive international experience in public health project design and supervision, health care evaluation and international health care management. He received his doctorate and a diploma in tropical medicine from McGill University, Montreal, Canada, and a master’s in public health from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Dr. Karefa-Smart has over 15 years of teaching experience in international health in universities in Nigeria and the United States. For five years he was the assistant director general of the World Health Organization, and prior to that, served the WHO Regional Office for Africa as the Western area health officer. Dr. Karefa-Smart’s experience and talents have been utilized as a consultant to the World Bank, the United Nations Fund for Populations Activities, the Pan American Health Organization, USAID and the African Development Bank. His public health insights are strengthened by eight years as a member of parliament and four years as foreign minister of Sierra Leone.

Dr. Karefa-Smart’s accomplishments in the field of public health have received recognition through numerous citations, honorary degree’s and public service appointments.

William Loveless, Ed.D.

Dr. William Loveless, a principal of Health Management, Inc., specializes in leadership training, organizational design and supervisory skills development. His expertise is in administration and human resource development. Dr. Loveless received his doctorate in foundations of education from the University of Maryland and holds a license to practice marriage and family counseling.

Dr. Loveless was president of Columbia Union College (CUC) in Maryland for 11 years. CUC is a private college offering strong programs in nursing, allied health and liberal arts. It also offers an evening adult education degree program.

Dr. Loveless co-hosted a weekly TV talk show for six years in Washington, D.C. He regularly conducts training workshops and retreats for managers, department heads and board members. His expertise is in planning and training groups to aide health care and educational institutions in the creation of dynamic, productive organizations, which involve the talents of the entire staff and can rapidly adapt to the changes inherent in today’s work place.

He currently is a professor in the Department of Educational Support at Loma Linda University’s School of Dentistry, a member of the social work faculty at Loma Linda University, and on regular appointment at the University of California Riverside in the extension division, teaching adults in the Department of Business and Supervision.
